Asked if the Prime Minister thought the operation in Fallujah had been a success, the PMOS replied that in terms of moving into the city and dealing with insurgents, then yes, but the operation continued and it was still dangerous there. What was now important was to switch the focus into reconstruction, as had been done successfully else where.

To quote yesterday’s Independent:
"But as American forces contemplate what is left of Fallujah, some might remember the words of a US officer standing amid the ruins of Hue in Vietnam a generation ago. ‘In order to save the city,’ he declared without a hint of irony, ‘we had to destroy it.’"
New country, new war, new enemy, same ignorant and stupid attitude leading to the same dreadful results.
