» Friday, May 11, 2007Prime Minister’s Visit to France
Asked what the Prime Minister would discuss in his meetings with President Jacques Chirac and President Elect Nicolas Sarkozy, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that with President Chirac this was a private meeting as they had worked closely together over the last decade, and whilst he was in Paris it was appropriate that the Prime Minister called in to see the President. With Mr. Sarkozy it was anticipated that the discussions cover key forthcoming international meetings such as the EU, looking at the Treaty, and the G8 looking at climate change and follow-up to the Gleneagles agenda. Asked if Mr. Sarkozy was seen as an ally in backing an amended Treaty, the PMS said that she did not speak for Mr. Sarkozy but that was something that the Prime Minister and Mr. Sarkozy would be discussing. The Prime Minister has set out his view clearly on what he believes is the right way forward on the Treaty and that is an amending treaty and not one with the characteristics of a constitutional treaty. Asked, apparently out of curiosity, why the Prime Minister was not travelling to Paris by train, the PMS said she was not able to comment on the Prime Minister’s transport arrangements.
