US Election

When asked if the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) knew how and when the Prime Minister might respond to the US Elections, he replied that would depend on how and when the elections result became known.

When asked again if the Prime Minister was going to sit up and watch the Elections, the PMOS said that he did not know but that the Prime Minister would do what he felt like doing at the time.

Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with Alastair Campbell’s comment that he had already taken the political hit for supporting President Bush on Iraq, the PMOS answered that the Government had consistently refused to comment on the US Elections, even if that same constraint did not apply to other people.

Asked again what the Prime Minister’s relationship with Senator Kerry, the PMOS said he thought it better to discuss such subjects once the US results were out. He repeated that the Prime Minister had met Mr Kerry twice; once at Ronald Reagan’s funeral and once before briefly in the Senate in 1998.
