Migrant Workers

Asked for reaction to the DWP statistics on migrant workers, the PMS replied that firstly, none of these people were claiming benefits. We were talking about people who were coming here to work legally and made a contribution to the economy. This was all in the context of a situation where the total number of people claiming unemployment benefit had fallen by 90,000 over the last year, and the employment rate at almost 75% was one of the highest on record.

Put that it was still quite a lot higher than the estimates, and asked what the implications were, the PMS replied that these were people who were coming here to work legally to make a contribution to the economy, with virtually none of them claiming benefits.

Put that it was not good enough to simply say that they were paying taxes, it was a huge change to society to have that number of people coming in at that speed, and it did have an impact on our public services, the PMS replied that it also had a big impact on the economy. And in an environment where employment was nearing record highs and unemployment was falling.

Asked if they would be entitled to tax credits, the PMS replied that they would be entitled to whatever they would be entitled to under British & European law.
