EU Summit

Asked how he would characterise the meetings with the Prime Minister Chancellor Merkel and President Sarkozy, the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman (PMOS) said all this was about getting through the business, underlining our red lines on the four issues, as he had said yesterday. He was not going to get into the process of giving a running commentary on progress, or lack of progress. As always with Chancellor Merkel, it was businesslike, it was constructive but in terms of progress, we would need to see where we go to.

Catholicism

Asked whether PMOS could give any guidance on stories this morning about the Prime Minister's Catholicism, or impending conversion and was it correct that it would be sooner rather than later, the PMOS said these were matters of personal belief which he did not deal with. He dealt with Government policy, not matters of personal belief.

World Trade Organisation

Asked whether Britain would lean on lean Brazil and India, the PMOS said the Prime Minister's view had not changed at all. There was still a good chance of getting a deal if people were prepared to make the necessary moves. The next step was Geneva. We would continue to press for people to make the final decision because it was in the interests, not of any particular part of the world, but of the global community as a whole, including the developing nations for there to be a deal. The stakes in this remain very high if you looked at any issue, such as poverty in Africa or how you continued to sustain growth in the world's economy, the key was to get a successful outcome at Doha. That remained as true today as it did at the very point when we started this process.

Visit to Rome

Asked whether the Prime Minister's visit would be in a personal capacity, the PMOS said we had set out that the Prime Minister wished to talk to the Pope, as he had done in the past, not just about inter-faith issues, but also global and regional issues. One of those was the situation in the Middle East. Therefore, it was entirely appropriate, as he had done in the past, for the Prime Minister to meet the Pope.

Chequers

Asked whether there was any truth in the Mirror story today that the Prime Minister planned to use Chequers after he left office, the PMOS replied that Chequers was run by an independent trust, and they made the decisions on what happened with Chequers, not the Government. He understood that there was a tradition allowing Prime Ministers to say farewell to staff and so on. Part of the advantage to everybody this time was, because it was an orderly process of transition, not on overnight transition, people had time to and make decisions about this. But first and foremost it was a matter for the independent trust.
