Asked about the salary review board report which showed that expenses had gone up from £87million last year to £96million this year, and given this, did the Prime Minister think he was getting value for money from MPs, the PMS replied that this was a matter for the MPs themselves, and the House of Commons. This was not for the Prime Minister to opine on. Asked if the Prime Minister had a view at all on the length of the summer break, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister was taking his holiday in August, and would be back at the end of August/early September. There would be a full Government programme including Cabinet meetings in September. Put that the Tories were getting exercised that figures for the civil service pension scheme had climbed from £101billion to £128billion in the last year, and was the kind of direction of the size of the civil service pensions the Prime Minister was keen to see, the PMS replied that as people knew, we had reformed civil service pensions, including increasing the age limit. It was best to speak to the Treasury on the specifics, but it was the PMS’ recollection that these figures moved around quite a lot depending on the discount rate used, and said he would be amazed if this was in any way related to anything to do with Government policy.
