Put that Sir Jock Stirrup had said that Britain would handover control of Basra by the end of the year, the PMS said that he had not seen the comments, but there was a decision that needed to be taken in relation to Basra Palace. As people knew, we had already moved to overwatch in three provinces out of the four, and decisions would have to be made about the fourth.

Put that that sounded like a decision had been made, and that perhaps there had been a presentation from Des Browne at Cabinet today, the PMS replied that he was not aware of any presentation by Des Browne at Cabinet.

Put that it seemed very specific, the PMS said again that there was a decision that had to be taken in relation to Basra Palace, and we had always said that that was a decision which we would take over the coming period.

Asked about the decision that had to be taken, and did that mean we were close to a decision, the PMS said that we had always said that we would need to take a decision in relation to the future of Basra Palace over the months ahead. That had been the position for some time, and the position had not changed and people should not interpret what the PMS had said as a change in that position.
