Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with Alan Milburn s comments in his article that now was not the time for greater state intervention, the PMS said that the journalist was quoting half a sentence from Alan Milburn s piece; when we read the article in Downing Street this morning the general view was that it bore a remarkable similarity to a speech the Prime Minister gave on Monday and we couldn t see anything in the article that the Prime Minister would disagree with. Asked why the Prime Minister was reading Alan Milburn, the PMS said that he had not said that the Prime Minister read it; he said that people in Downing Street had read it and didn t see anything in the article that could not have been said by the Prime Minister. Asked if Alan Milburn gave the Prime Minister prior sight of his article, the PMS said that Alan Milburn was responsible for his own articles. Asked who wrote the Prime Minister s speech on Monday, the PMS said that the Prime Minister was responsible for his speech. Asked if Alan Milburn was in regular contact with the Prime Minister due to his involvement in the Commission on Social Mobility, the PMS said yes.
