Asked to characterise the discussions between Margaret Beckett, Foreign Secretary and Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister and why there was a need to reiterate our request for co-operation, the PMOS said as both Ministers were at the G8 meeting in Amman it was a chance to repeat the request in person and there was nothing more to it than that. As we had repeatedly said we will proceed on the basis of evidence, meaning the police will establish the facts first, but equally as the Prime Minister said there will be no political or diplomatic bar to the investigation. Asked if it was correct that the Saudi government had given the Prime Minister ten days to get the SFO investigation called off, the PMOS said as there was an investigation underway he would not be able to comment. Asked to confirm that the Saudi government had issued threats regarding the BAE investigation, the PMOS said again that he would remain consistent and not comment.
