Cabinet

Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) said this morning’s Cabinet meeting was given over to the first full meeting of the Economic Policy Group. It was chaired by the Prime Minister and opened with a substantial presentation by the Chancellor. This was followed by a discussion of the issues to be addressed by the Group when it meets outside the Cabinet, chaired by the Chancellor (which all members of the Cabinet are able to attend). The Chancellor will then report back to full Cabinet, again chaired by the Prime Minister, at a second full meeting of the Economic Policy Group in the near future.

Asked if the PMOS could give a flavour of what the Chancellor talked about at Cabinet, the PMOS said the HM Treasury would give journalists a fuller read-out. However, in terms of the overall analysis, it was about how we prepared for globalisation given the strength of our position overall – ie we have an economy which has sustained growth rates, low inflation and the highest employment rates ever. What we had to do was equip the country and give people the skills they needed for the future.

Asked who would be chairing the meetings, the PMOS said given the importance of the economy this was an issue discussed by the Cabinet, but it would then go into a group meeting like the other policy groups, which would be chaired by the Chancellor. The Prime Minister chaired some; other members of the Cabinet chaired others. It would then come back to a full Cabinet in the near future, with a report back on the work of the group.

Asked whether this was a recent agreement, the PMOS said this had always been the intention whenever they were discussing the five policy groups. It was always intended the economy should be discussed at full Cabinet level but would also meet outside the Cabinet.
