Prime Minister’s Regional Tour

Asked if the PMOS was able to give any details about the regional tour tomorrow, the PMOS said that all he could say was that the Prime Minister would give his fourth "Our Nations Future" lecture on Friday. It would be on Science. This was part of a series of lectures looking at what the Government needed to do to secure our country in future. Science was crucial to our future, crucial to our history and our health. It was obvious that technological advances and innovations were going to be the key to our future economic and industrial success.

The Prime Minister wanted to address the key scientific questions that faced the nation, such as:were we inspiring a new generation of brilliant scientists? Did we put enough trust in scientists to help us form opinions and tackle problems like climate change and diseases? Were we fully exploiting the commercial potential of our inventions? The PMOS said journalists maybe interested to know the Prime Minister had given an interview to the new Scientist Magazine, which would appear tomorrow.

Asked whether the Prime Minister would address the issue of "vocal minorities" such as animal rights protestors, in this speech, the PMOS said journalists knew the Prime Minister’s view on animal extremism. That was not the core subject of the speech but in terms of a debate about how much we trusted scientists and our attitude towards scientists it was part of the overall theme.
