Olympics

Asked if the Prime Minister had any message of sympathy for President Chirac, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said the Prime Minister had already been asked about this during his live broadcast earlier. The Prime Minister had said that "the British had always been magnanimous in victory and gracious in defeat and we should be magnanimous".

Asked if role as Olympics Minister would stay as part of her existing job or was there to be a reshuffle, the PMS said there was no need for a reshuffle. The Secretary of State for the DCMS would combine the role as Olympics Minister in the same way that she had combined her role in supporting the bid.

Asked if legislation was required, the PMS said that we had announced in the Queen’s Speech that there would be an Olympics Bill if our bid were successful. A Bill would be published next week, which would establish the Olympic Delivery Authority, which would do the necessary work to deliver the Olympics in 2012.

Asked how the Olympics would affect the Department of Culture Media and Sport, the PMS said that clearly the Olympics would become a large part of the Department’s work but that this would not mean that other areas such as the arts would be neglected. She said that the Prime Minister had indicated that he thought the successful bid would benefit the whole country.

Asked how big the budget for the Olympics was, the PMS said that certain commitments had been made about funding as part of bid process and directed the journalist to the DCMS for details.

Asked if the Government now needed a rethink about some of the other London projects, for example Cross Rail, as it would clearly not be finished in time, the PMS said that following the successful outcome of the bid, there was obviously much work to be done. The PMS said she could not comment on the effect the announcement would have on other individual projects.

Asked what role Lord Coe would have in the future, the PMS said she thought Lord Coe would be enjoying his success this evening in Singapore, but she that did not have any information on his future role.
