Iraq

Asked what the Iraq Study Group (ISG) report was likely to say about the Prime Minister’s evidence to it, the PMOS stressed the ISG would draw its own conclusions on the back of that evidence. He reminded people that the content of the Prime Minister’s evidence had already been widely reported on. He explained that Prime Minister had told the ISG Iraq must been seen in the context of a wider, holistic strategy for the Middle-East, one that responded to issues in Iraq but also placed particular emphasis on Palestine and Israel.

Asked for a response to reports that the new US Secretary for Defence Robert Gates had said the US coalition is not winning the war in Iraq, the PMOS replied that the Prime Minister’s view was we need to support the democratically-elected Iraqi government and the wishes of the millions of Iraqis who voted for a multi-ethnic, unitary government. He added that as difficult as it is, that job needs to be seen through and we must help the Iraqi government extend its capability to exercise authority over the whole country.

  1. It’s nice to see that in the midst of the debacle, the war is supporting and enriching 100,000 mercenaries – nearly as many as there are in the US Army contingent in the coalition.
