Police Inquiry

Asked by the BBC if there was anything to say about the Prime Minister being interviewed by the police, the PMOS said no.

Asked if there had been any contact between the police and No10 about the possibility of setting a date, the PMOS said that he did not give running commentaries. There was a flurry of calls yesterday suggesting that there might be something happening tomorrow, and it left only one group of people mystified – Downing Street. The PMOS said that there was only one question that he was going to answer and that was: had the Prime Minister been contacted or interviewed by the police? The answer to that was no. The PMOS continued to say that when he knew, he would let journalists know.

In answer to repeated questions about whether the Prime Minister had not yet been contacted, the PMOS said that he was not getting into the process business. He said again that when he knew if the Prime Minister had been interviewed, then he would let others know.

Asked what would happen if the answer was yes, and the House had risen and there were not daily lobby briefings, the PMOS said that the question was totally getting ahead of things. People should deal with each day as it came.

Put by the BBC that just to be "belt and braces" about it all, if there was a period between which the Prime Minister had been contacted, and we knew that, but it was before he had been interviewed, and the question was asked by journalists if he had been interviewed, the PMOS would be able to confirm to people, the PMOS at this point hopped around in a circle, saying he was dancing on the head of a pin. He repeated that he would let everyone know when he did. That was all that he was promising. The PMOS said that he did not know if there was still money resting on this story, but there was no money resting on it for him.
