Northern Ireland

Asked if there would be a formal announcement that the deadline on Friday had been passed, the PMOS said that, though not taking anything for granted, the Sinn Fein statement yesterday was positive and we were looking to be in a position where we can have a working assumption that things are going ahead. He did not think that there would be a great ‘moment’ on Friday, there would be an assessment and the response from the other parties was still awaited. Peter Hain was in contact with the other parties and it would be best to see where we were on Friday.

  1. "the Sinn Fein statement yesterday was positive"

Hmm. If an agreement is reached that might signal an end to hostilities and bloodshed in Ireland. Can’t have that. Need an incident to derail the process. Someone like a, hmmm, let’s see; like a Michael Stone, someone who can be easily discredited should he fail. That should keep things ticking along!! :-/
