Asked for more detail on the extent to which Permanent Secretaries from the departments involved had looked into the allegations, the PMS said that Harriet Harman was currently in the House discussing this. Harriet Harman had spoken about the specific allegations made about the three departments and had talked about Sir Gus O’Donnell seeking assurances that Permanent Secretaries had looked into these claims.

Put that he wouldn’t characterise the enquiries made by the Permanent Secretaries in their departments as an Inquiry, the PMS said that they had done what was sensible in this situation; they had given the Cabinet Secretary the assurance that their departments had looked into these claims.

Put that Lord Adonis had looked angry while making his statement to the House and was the Prime Minister also angry at the allegations made, the PMS said that Stephen Byers had decided to refer himself to the parliamentary authorities and the Prime Minister welcomed that and thought it was the right thing to do.

Asked if the Prime Minister thought that Geoff Hoon and Patricia Hewitt should also refer themselves to the parliamentary authorities, the PMS replied that it was up to the individuals involved to make their own decisions. The PMS said the nature of the allegations against them appeared to be different to the allegations about Mr Byers.
