Asked if the Prime Minister could confirm the expulsion of an Israeli diplomat from the UK, the PMS said that there would be a Written Ministerial Statement this afternoon on this and people should wait for that. The Foreign Office Permanent Secretary had met with the Israeli Ambassador yesterday, but there was nothing to add to this. Asked if Ann Keen’s announcement today was anything to do with single sex wards, the PMS said that Ann Keen was today announcing work done with the Design Council to improve patients’ privacy and dignity in NHS hospitals. Designs included the universal patient gown, which kept the wearer’s body covered, and was warmer and more comfortable; the bedpod, which created a private, patient-controlled environment; a capsule washroom, which would rapidly refit wards to create single-sex toilet and washing facilities; a reclining day chair, which was a unique hybrid between a wheelchair and a bed which provided greater comfort and security for patients being moved around the hospital; a new screening system to enhance privacy and dignity; and a flexible signage system to allow staff to designate same-sex areas. In relation to mixed sex wards, by June next year, all 1,157 schemes that were partially or wholly funded by the Department to eliminate mixed-sex accommodation would be completed. From April 2010, trusts that failed to deliver same-sex accommodation (except where clinically justified) would be subject to financial sanctions.
