National Maritime Centre

Asked what the purpose of the new National Maritime Centre was, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that the purpose of the new centre was to strengthen the UK’s response to maritime incidents. The continual rise of piracy incidents off the Horn of Africa and terrorist events in Mumbai had indicated the intent to exploit the sea and export terror and unlawful activity. Lord West had spoken about how well our agencies had been working to combat these threats. But the new centre would ensure that the UK had a strengthened response to those challenges and a faster and more effective response when crises occurred.
