Put that 10billion had been saved due to lower than expected claims for unemployment benefit and what would that money be spent on in the Budget, the PMS said he wouldn’t comment on what may or may not be in the Budget. The PMS said that there was a saving for the Government due to the lower unemployment figures, but it was for the Chancellor to make any further announcements in the Budget. Asked whether the Government felt that the tide was turning, the PMS referred people to Yvette Cooper’s words on the subject this morning. Asked if the Prime Minister was concerned about the rise in the number of economically inactive people, the PMS replied that these figures needed to be seen in the round. The focus in this recession had been on youth unemployment and getting people back to work in long-term, sustained roles. Today’s news was welcome, but there was always more to be done. Asked if the Prime Minister was worried that the number of people out of work for more than a year had jumped to its highest level since 1997, the PMS said that one of the features of any recession was that there would be some people out of work for a long time. The range of policies the Government had put in place for getting young people particularly back into work or some form of training was important. Long-term unemployment was a concern, but the Government’s policies were seeking as far as possible to address that by providing training and other opportunities.
