Asked about comments made by a senior RBS official that suggested that British banks would be at a disadvantage after new Government rules were brought in to take control of the structure and amount of bonuses, the PMS said that the Government wished to see a competitive and healthy banking system, with British banks playing their part in that. However, we also needed to have responsible banking and the Prime Minister thought it was entirely consistent to achieve both of these adjectives.
