Asked if the Prime Minister knew whether or not the Iranians were legally allowed to hold the British yachtsmen, the PMS said that the facts were still emerging. So far our understanding was that these yachtsmen were on their way to a race and inadvertently strayed into Iranian waters. We were in close contact with the families and the Deputy Ambassador at the Embassy in London, and had pressed for consular access to the yachtsmen. The Foreign Secretary had made clear this morning that they were being treated well. The most important thing was that we did as much as we could to get these men released. Asked if there had been an attempt by Iran to make this a political issue, the PMS said that the most important thing was to get a process underway in order to get these men released as soon as possible. Asked if it was fair to say that the men had been kidnapped, the PMS said that he wouldn’t go as far as that; all we knew so far was that the men had been detained. Asked if consular access had been denied by Iran, the PMS said that it was part of the appropriate international convention that consular access was given and that was what we expected.
