Northern Ireland

Asked how concerned the Prime Minister was about the devolution of policing and justice in Northern Ireland, the PMS said that the Prime Minister was focused on Northern Ireland. The Prime Minister had a meeting yesterday with the Taoiseach and said that we were making progress on all the issues; we had the financial agreement and believed we would be able to find solutions to any other remaining issues.
Asked what the Prime Minister thought about Martin McGuiness’ comments that a date for stage two of the devolution needed to be named by Christmas, the PMS said that it would be good to have a clear timetable, but the process needed to be implemented. Both governments were engaged with the Northern Ireland parties and would do whatever we could to move things forward.
