» Wednesday, November 11, 2009Lobby Press Briefings
The PMS announced that a joint working group would be established to review the operation of Downing Street media briefings in light of the changes in the reporting of the work of Government in an increasingly fast-moving and on-line media world. This would be done collaboratively with representatives from the Lobby and from No 10/Government Communications. Asked if there could be televised briefings, the PMS said that we would not rule anything out at this stage. The way that people were accessing/receiving information was changing and we had to address that. Asked if any changes proposed would be made before a general election, the PMS said that we would look to make any agreed changes early next year. Asked if one of the ideas was to have briefings by Ministers, the PMS said that we would look at the idea of having briefings by Ministers, other Government officials and/or political spokespeople. Asked if there was anything wrong with the current system, the PMS said that there was nothing wrong with the current system but we needed to better reflect the current operating environment. How news travelled, how fast it travelled and how it broke was changing. The tradition of Lobby was at the heart of system but we had to collectively understand and respond to the way in which we dealt with the current operating environment.
