Asked about the new proposals regarding the retention of DNA, the PMS said that for details it was best to speak to the Home Office but in general the Government felt that DNA played an essential part in fighting crime and providing justice for victims.

Asked if the Prime Minister felt more cheerful about the economy and if the target of recovery at the end of the year was looking achievable, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had been feeling more cheerful about the economy for a while because there had been some positive indicators. It was sad that unemployment was up even slightly but the trend was looking more positive, particularly on the young people front, which the Government was particularly concerned about. However, it continued to be a global recession and the Government remained committed to investing 5billion in creating jobs, which had started last November and was beginning make an impact.

Asked what the Prime Minister thought about MPs saying they should get a pay rise, the PMS said that the Prime Minister thought that the most important thing was to turn our backs on a discredited old system of expenses.
