Lisbon Treaty/EU Presidency
« Northern Ireland | Back to most recent briefing | Public Sector Pay »
Asked if the Prime Minister planned to press the Czech and Polish Presidents to expedite ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, the Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) said that the Prime Minister had made a statement on the Irish decision over the weekend and would let the process take its course.
Asked at what point a EU President would be sworn in, the PMS said that the Treaty had to be formally ratified before that could happen and we were not at that point yet.
Asked if the Government would support Tony Blair s candidacy for the EU Presidency, the PMS repeated what we had stated previously; there was not yet a vacancy, but if there was one and Tony Blair wished to be a candidate then he would receive the Government s support.
