Parliamentary Standards

Asked if the Prime Minister had a view on David Cameron s proposal to increase food and alcohol prices in Parliament, the PMS said that these things were important for MPs and Lobby journalists alike, so maybe there was a vested interest in the question. The Prime Minister had always been focused on the need to cut the cost of politics, whether it was salaries of Ministers or his own salary, and was committed to reform. The Prime Minister s general view was that we had to cut the cost of politics but we had to do it in a sensible way that attacked the things that would really make a difference to the way Parliament worked.

Put that that suggested the Prime Minister did not agree with David Cameron, the PMS said no, the point he was making was that the Prime Minister had always been very clear about the need to reform and cut the cost of politics.

Asked if the Prime Minister had a view on the suggestion to cut the number of MPs in Parliament, the PMS said that he was not in a position to comment.

Asked if the Prime Minister had a view on the fact that the Speaker of the House of Commons had hired a spin-doctor, the PMS said that he had not spoken to the Prime Minister about this subject.
