Asked what the Prime Minister thought about newspaper headlines today pointing towards the end of the recession, the PMS said that there were some interesting and encouraging signs today but both the Prime Minister and the Chancellor felt that this was not a time for complacency. One of the messages the Chancellor had been emphasising yesterday was the need to continue the recovery going by the appropriate level of expenditure. The Chancellor had also made clear that he saw the recovery coming through towards the end of this year, but it was always encouraging to see early signs.
