Put that the Chief of Staff had hinted today that there would be more troops heading to Afghanistan and had the US put in a formal request for more troops yet, the PMS replied that the US had not put in a request. President Obama was expected to present plans on Afghanistan later today. As the MOD had been pointing out through the course of the morning, nowhere (in the Times interview), did the Chief of the General Staff state that we would be sending more troops. He was talking about the number of troops that might be available. The PMS advised people not to get ahead of themselves; it was necessary first of all for the Americans to present their plans. We would have a discussion with them next week in the course of the Prime Minister s bilateral meeting with President Obama on Wednesday and then a further, wider discussion with NATO leaders on Friday at the NATO Summit. Asked if no troops were going or just that a decision had yet to be made, the PMS said that we needed to see first of all, details of the Americans plans as well as have further discussions with NATO leaders. Decisions would necessarily have to wait for those discussions to take place. Briefing took place at 11:00 | Search for related news Original PMOS briefings are © Crown Copyright.
