Asked about the Prime Minister’s statement this afternoon, the PMS said that the main purpose of the statement was to report back from both the European Council meeting and the situation in Afghanistan following on from the trip at the weekend.
Asked for details on support for the automotive industry, such as short-term loans, and if a statement could be expected this week, the PMS said that this was something that Lord Mandelson and his department were considering. They had a useful meeting with the car industry a few weeks ago and were considering their response in light of that. As and when the department was in a position to say more they would do so.
Asked about investment in Palestinian territories, the PMS said that UK support was distributed by the Palestinian Authority, which was the case in both Gaza and the West Bank.
Asked if there was anything to infer from the fact that there had not yet been a statement on Equitable Life, the PMS said no.
