Asked if Hilary Benn’s comments at the weekend signified a split in Cabinet over Heathrow, the PMS said no. We would be making an announcement on Heathrow in the new year. However, as the Secretary of State for Transport had been making clear, it was very important that we considered all the environmental issues that had been raised.
Put that it had been odd that Hilary Benn was not able to back Government policy, the PMS said that the Government policy had been discussed and agreed upon by Cabinet on numerous occasions.
