Welfare Reform

Asked whether James Purnell brought forward his welfare reforms to this time despite the predictions of 3.5 million people being unemployed next year or because of those predictions, the PMS said that the reason for bringing the reforms forward to this time, something that had been in the pipeline for a while, was to ensure the Government did everything necessary in order to support people and ensure that they remained in touch with the labour market. This was even more important at a difficult time for the economy.
