The Leader was asked why the present government was so reluctant to admit to the activities of Saudi princes. Mr Straw responded by saying that he did not recognise the descriptive term used by the journalist. The issue had been raised with him on two occasions during Business Questions earlier. Asked about the discussion at Cabinet earlier, Mr Straw said it had been a good discussion. He referred to his response to an MP in the House about his chairing of today's Cabinet: "After my hour of glory, I have turned back into a pumpkin." There had been an overall discussion on the proposals by the Home Secretary. Asked if the Northern Ireland Secretary had been present, he said that he had been. Cabinet had also discussed forthcoming business and one other issue, which he would not go into for very good reasons. Asked about the Prime Minister's interview with the Guardian where he said he believed that he could get a deal with the President on emissions at the Summit, the PMOS referred the journalist to what the Prime Minister had actually said, and what he himself had said earlier this week. We were still very much in favour of a target, we believed a target was right, and we were aiming to get a target. But the question was how far could we get at this Summit. It was encouraging that President Bush had said last week that firstly there should be a global framework for finding a solution, and secondly that there should be a limit of some kind on global emissions. Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with President Bush's characterisation and comments of the pressures facing dissidents across the world, especially with regards to Russia and its reform process, as it appeared to be "derailed", the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman (PMOS) replied that as he had said this morning, people had to only go back to the EU Summit at Lahkti to see that there were concerns across Europe about developments and relations with Russia. As the PMOS had said yesterday, it was up to Russia to decide what sort of relationship it wanted; we wanted it to be constructive, but part of being constructive meant sharing the same values both politically and economically. The question was: would Russia want that too? Briefing took place at 15:00 | Read whole briefing | Comments (0) Police Inquiry
