Afghanistan

Put that the Prime Minister had said that he was worried about Afghanistan, and how was the situation there now characterised, and were things going as well as could be expected, the PMOS replied that there was, as there was in Iraq, a real struggle going on. Our troops were doing a very, very good job, and we believed that we were meeting the threat. However, that did not mean that there was not a daily struggle, as there was.

Asked if we were winning, the PMOS said that the question was simplifying things. If people looked at what the situation was in Helmand, and had our troops made a real difference, then yes, they had. Had they made a real difference on a daily basis? Yes. Was there still a major threat? Yes.

Asked if we were closer to black or white, the PMOS asked: had we pushed the Taliban back in many places? Yes. However, we should not kid ourselves, as we had always known that this was going to be a long, drawn-out struggle, and therefore, we needed to persist with it. The PMOS said that he was not going to reduce it down to simplicities, as we needed to face the fact that this was a long, drawn-out struggle. Could we take anything for granted? Answer: no.
