Trident Debate/Vote

The Leader read out the terms of the Government’s motion, which had been tabled earlier and which would appear on the Order Paper on Friday, March 9: "That this House supports the Government’s decisions, as set out in the White Paper "The Future of the United Kingdom’s Nuclear Deterrent" (Cm 6994), to take the steps necessary to maintain the UK’s minimum strategic nuclear deterrent beyond the life of the existing system, and to take further steps towards meeting our disarmament responsibilities under Article VI of the Non-Proliferation Treaty"
Mr Straw said that it would enable MPs to have two working days to put down any amendments, if they wished to do so. The argument in favour of renewing Trident was overwhelming, in his view. Pressed about Article VI, Mr Straw said that the UK complied better with it than any other of the nuclear-weapon states. The whipping for the debate was a matter for the Chief Whip, but he pointed out that it was Government business.
