Asked if the Prime Minister’s packed diary was the reason he had not been able to meet with some of the families of soldiers who had dies in Iraq, the PMOS said that as we had said in the past, he did meet relatives of those killed in Iraq from time to time. As he had said at PMQs he was completely committed to supporting our troops in Iraq and the families who had to wait for them but he did not believe this was helped by meeting in public.
Asked if, in the context of Gazprom’s bid for Centrica, the Prime Minister saw the energy issue as something which should be singled out for protection, the PMOS said that he wouldn’t comment on an ongoing commercial matter. However on the general point the Prime Minister believed in free trade and he had made his commitment to the liberalisation of the energy market in Europe. But obviously that needed to take place within the normal regulations which insured fair play and fair treatment of customers.
