John Prescott

Asked whether the Prime Minister had spoken to John Prescott, the PMOS said that since we had said this was a private matter it would be entirely wrong for him to speak about it. It remained a private matter, as did discussions between the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister. Put that it was not a private matter because the Deputy Prime Minister had allegedly used his Admiralty Arch flat and the election battle bus to conduct his affair, the PMOS said that any specific allegation should be put to the ODPM. We regarded this as a private matter and therefore it should remain so. Asked if the Deputy Prime Minister had abused his office or the civil service, the PMOS said no. Asked whether there were rules governing relations between Ministers and civil servants, the PMOS said that it was best if journalists spoke to the Cabinet Office about civil services rules, as they were the responsible department. John Prescott had set out the particulars and as far as we were concerned was the end of the matter.

Put that as the Prime Minister was in charge of propriety that the battle bus allegation needed addressed, the PMOS said that it was best that detailed questions be put to the department as was only right. Asked if the Deputy Prime Minister had offered to resign, the PMOS said no. Asked if there was any concern within Whitehall as it appeared the source had come from private office, the PMOS said he had nothing to suggest other than what had already been said.

Put that John Prescott had made his career out of lampooning the Conservatives and that now he was caught out in the same way were we really saying his position was not affected, the PMOS said that what the media and public did not see was the absolutely vital role John Prescott fulfilled in co-ordinating cabinet committees and driving forward the government’s agenda under the Prime Minister. This role remained very important and John Prescott fulfilled that role in a way that delivered real benefits for the government and real benefits for people.

  1. "what the media and public did not see was the absolutely vital role John Prescott fulfilled in co-ordinating cabinet committees and driving forward the government’s agenda under the Prime Minister."

You betcha! No one can see it at all – or even the remotest sign of it. The man is an incompetent inarticulate bully with the brains of a spanner, full stop.

I don’t actually give a toss about Prescott’s sexual proclivities. As far as I’m concerned he can fornicate in the Admiralty Arch, on the election battle bus or even with the election battle bus. It makes no odds, he’s still a useless barrel of lard.
