Iraq

Asked about comments by the Professor of International Law at Oxford who had said there was still a difference in the US position as set out by Colin Powell and the Prime Minister's, the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman (PMOS) pointed that he didn't think the professor had been part of the conversations held between the President and the Prime Minister.

Amnesty Report

Asked what the Prime Minister's reaction to the amnesty report that criticised the war on terror as being the worst attack on human rights since the second world war the PMOS said that the Government would no doubt want to study the report in full before making any response and he would not comment on phrases seemingly designed to make headlines. If it came to considering the worst atrocities against human rights one would have to take into account what Saddam did in terms of 400,000 mass graves in Iraq and you would also have to take into account what Al Qaeda did in one day in America.

Deputy Prime Minister

Asked if the Prime Minister would react to being compared to Harold Wilson by the Deputy Prime Minister the PMOS said that he had not seen the DPM's comments and the comments are a matter for the DPM. The Prime Minister would be carrying on his job as normal. In response to further questioning the PMOS restated that the Prime Minister had set on his position on the matter and that he had nothing further to add.

Iraq

Asked if the Prime Minister was going to the United Nations next week the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman (PMOS) told journalists that he had nothing further to add to yesterday's answer but it was important to bear in mind that we were still awaiting the report by Lakhdar Brahimi, due at the end of the month, which would set out the next stage of developments in Iraq. The PMOS reiterated that even though events were picking up momentum as 30 June approached it was still important to take the process step by step.

David Hill

Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with David Hill's alleged comments about the French airport disaster as reported in the press the PMOS told journalists that David had explained in his statement to the Daily Mail that his comment had been flippant and that this was where the matter should be left. Asked if David Hill would be apologising to the families of those who had died the PMOS said that as David had said in his statement as anyone who knows him would recognise that the last thing he would want was to cause offence to anyone. That was not his intention.
