Israeli ‘Strategic Dialogue’

Asked whether the Israeli decision to suspend the strategic dialogue over universal jurisdiction was seen as a rebuke given the Foreign Secretary was there, the PMS said that we are in discussions with Israel regarding dates for the next round of the strategic dialogue and we have a good relationship with the Israeli government.

The PMS added that the government is moving quickly to change the situation regarding universal jurisdiction so we don’t have a situation where a member of the Israeli government can be threatened with an arrest warrant if they come to the UK.

To allow anyone that has been alleged guilty of war crimes, into Britain – or any EU state – without them being arrested and brought before the courts, is an affront to both justice and democracy.

These allegations of war crimes have been made by a UN fact finding commission which examined all the available evidence on the ground and from survivors of Israel’s attack in 2008/9. They obtained credible evidence of war crimes by Israeli troops in which hundreds of children were shot and killed by the IDF. That those ministers responsible for this alleged atrocity should be allowed into any EU country without being detained, is completely unacceptable.

If Israel denies the charges then they must appear before the ICC in the Hague to refute the allegations. If not, we must assume their guilt. In that case, neither the UK or any EU state should be continuing to trade with Israel.

We must not be complicit in war crimes, for that would make us a party to such atrocities.
