Voting Reform
« President Sarkozy | Back to most recent briefing | Afghanistan »
Asked whether the PMS expected legislation to be brought forward in this parliament on voting reform, he replied that the media articles overnight were speculative and the Prime Minister had already said there was now a stronger case than ever that MPs should be elected with the support of more than half of the votes, as would be the case under an alternative voting system. Asked again when this would happen, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had already said that he would expect a referendum at some stage in the next parliament. He said the Prime Minister thought that this was an important part of making our system more democratic.
