Asked to respond to President Sarkozy’s comments that the UK lost out on appointments in the European Commission, the PMS said he was not clear where President Sarkozy had made those alleged comments and that his comments in Le Monde had been retracted. He referred the press to the Chancellor’s article in the Times today where he talks about the significance of Europe to the financial services sector. He reiterated the welcome appointment of Cathy Ashton in the crucial role of Vice President.
It was then put to the PMS that President Sarkozy had said that the French Commissioner was in charge of the financial services market, to which the PMS said he had not seen that reference but it was important that in the UK is that we would protect and champion our national interests within the context of Europe. He also referred the press to the measures in the Financial Services Bill.
