Asked what the Prime Minister based his claim on that the population wouldn’t hit 70 million, the PMS said that the Prime Minister recognised that people felt strongly about the issue of immigration and today’s speech was important. With the current system migration was being managed at every level; we had a comprehensive Points Based System, which was a major step forward in policy terms and as a result of that numbers would go down. However, this issue could not be looked at in isolation; as we improved the training and skills of people in this country they would be better equipped to take on the sorts of roles that, up until now, had previously been ring fenced for people outside the UK. Put that nothing could be done about European Union migration, the PMS said that there were plenty of other countries where people were seeking to come into the UK. Asked if the Prime Minister thought that recession was a good thing for immigration as less people wanted to come to the UK, the PMS said that the Prime Minister didn’t think that recession was ever a good thing. Asked what the Prime Minister thought the population would reach, the PMS said that the Prime Minister did not forecast the population; he was focused on making sure that we had the right policies in place.
