Postal Dispute

Asked if the Government was planning to intervene in the postal dispute, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that we encouraged the leadership of the unions and the Royal Mail to settle this dispute. We did not believe that either party would benefit in anyway from industrial action. We continued to believe that modernisation was still urgently needed and therefore encouraged the leadership of both parties to settle this dispute.

Put that the leader of the Communications Workers Unions had accused the Government of remaining silent, the PMS said that this was a matter for the two parties to resolve but that the Government continued to encourage that process.

Asked about the Postal Services Bill, the PMS said that the case remained as was set out by Lord Mandelson when the change was announced in July.
