General Dannatt
« Northern Ireland | Back to most recent briefing | Cabinet »
Put that General Dannatt had suggested that the Prime Minister turned down a request for more troops earlier this year, the PMS said that this was an old story and he would not discuss details of any internal Government discussions about troop numbers. This had been extensively covered, both when the Prime Minister spoke at the Liaison Committee and at lobby briefings in July. The key point was that there were seven thousand eight hundred troops in Afghanistan in the summer of 2007, now there were over nine thousand. Reserved funding for Afghanistan had also increased from seven hundred million pounds in 2006/07 to over three billion pounds this year. Any suggestion that the Prime Minister was unwilling to deploy more troops or provide the necessary resources was wrong.
As stated yesterday, we said we would review troop numbers after the Afghan election, in light of military advice and the situation on the ground, and after the outcome of the international discussions on the McChrystal review.
