Speaker

Asked if the Prime Minster retained full confidence in the Speaker, the PMS said that the Speaker was appointed by the Commons, not the Government and that the Prime Minister supported the will of the Commons and therefore he supports the person who has been elected as the Speaker of the Commons.

The PMS repeated that the Speaker is not appointed by the Prime Minister, but by the House of Commons and it is right this position is independent of Government, but that obviously the Prime Minister supports the person, in this case Michael Martin, who has been elected by the House of Commons.

Asked whether the Prime Minister thought the Speaker was doing a good job, the PMS said the Prime Minister had said previously that he thinks the Speaker is doing a good job and he stood by that, but these were not really matters for him, but for the House of Commons.
