Immigration

Asked if the Prime Minister was happy to see the population of the UK to rise above 70 million, the PMS replied that as Phil Woolas had said this morning, 70 million was a figure that had been identified by others. The point that he was making was that we had introduced an extensive shake up of immigration policy. We had now moved to a points based system that covered close to six in ten of all migrants, which was flexible and allowed us to raise of lower the number of migrants according to the needs of business and the country as a whole.

Put that the Prime Minister would be perfectly happy for the population to rise above 70 million, the PMS replied that the point was rather than discussing a cap on immigration, we had put in place a system that was more flexible and more responsive to the needs of business and the country as a whole.
