Party Funding

Asked if the Prime Minister thought that Lord Mandelson should set out the details of his meetings with Mr Deripaska, the PMS said that the issue related to a time when Lord Mandelson was not a member of the Government. Insofar as there were any questions that related to his time at the European Commission then they were being dealt with by the European Commission. People would have seen the letter that had been sent by David O Sullivan, the Director General for Trade at the European Commission, setting out the Commission s position on these issues.

Asked what the Prime Minister was suggesting should be investigated, the PMS said that as he had said at Lobby yesterday, that was not a question for him. It was an interpretation of what the Prime Minister had said about an opposition MP. These were party political matters that were being handled by party political colleagues.

Put that the Prime Minister clearly thought that an investigation should be launched and that Mr Mandelson s meetings with Mr Deripaska were relevant to his current job, the PMS said that the questions had been addressed in the letter from David O Sullivan on the 16th October, which dealt with the issues relating to Mr Mandelson s time at the European Commission. As far as there were any accusations against Mr Mandelson, they had been addressed in the letter.
