Afghanistan Kidnapping

Asked for further information on the reports of a British person captured in Afghanistan, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) said that we were still investigating on the ground, therefore, more information was needed before commenting in any way. The PMOS added that as he understood it, for journalists’ guidance, they should be careful about the name of the person that was going around, as it was not quite as it seemed.

Put that the FCO had said that this was not to be confused with John Nichol, the Gulf War pilot who had been captured previously in Iraq, the PMOS said that that was correct.

Asked if we could confirm that the person was a freelance journalist and had been kidnapped along with two Afghan nationals, the PMOS replied that the facts were not 100% clear, therefore he was not going to confirm anything until they were. As with the Ethiopia situation, it was a FCO lead, and we would let them lead on it.
