Forthcoming Business

The Leader said that next week would be devoted to the usual end-of-session debates on legislation which had started in the House of Lords. In summary: on Monday, November 6, the Commons would consider four linked NHS Bills, Lords amendments to the Animal Welfare Bill, the Police and Justice Bill, the Road Safety Bill and the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Bill, together with other Lords messages.

On Tuesday, November 7, the debates would continue on any Lords messages, and also amendments in respect of the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill and the Armed Forces Bill. If all the scheduled business was completed, Parliament would prorogue on the same day. If not, Prorogation would take place on Wednesday.

He pointed out that he had also given further details earlier of the dates of recesses in 2007. For the Easter recess, it was planned to rise on Thursday, 29 March and return on 16 April. The Whitsun recess would begin on Thursday, 24 May and the House would return on Monday, 4 June. For the summer recess next year, the House would rise on 26 July and return on Monday, 8 October. All the dates, as usual, were subject to progress of business. Mr Straw said he planned to publish the usual pocket calendar of the sitting days soon.

The Leader drew attention to a speech he would make later today to the Three Faiths Forum.
