Iraq Inquiry

Put that David Miliband had said that the inquiry was free to blame whoever it wanted after the Prime Minister had originally said that the inquiry was not set up for that purpose, the Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) told the assembled press that Sir John Chilcot was independent and he could say whatever he liked. The purpose of the inquiry was to get to the truth and to learn the lessons.

Put that David Miliband had said that Sir John Chilcot could find a way of making people swear on oath, the PMS said that he had told journalists that in this morning s lobby briefing and Sir John Chilcot had also said that in his letter to the Prime Minister.

Asked if this would have to come back to the House of Commons in order for the terms of reference to be confirmed, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had made a statement to the House on this already and there was a debate taking place on this today. It was important that Sir John Chilcot had the time and space to carry out a proper and thorough inquiry as we fully expected him to do.

Put that the terms of reference had changed over the last nine days, the PMS said that the terms under which they would take evidence were set out in Sir John Chilcot s letter to the Prime Minister and it had already been to the House twice in the last nine days.
