Pre-Charge Detention

Asked if people could expect any further tweaks or changes on 42 days, the PMS replied that the Government set out a package of measures on that last Tuesday.

Asked if that was it and there would be no further changes or concessions, or was the door being left open, the PMS replied that the Government set out its significant package of measures last Tuesday. The focus of the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary was on persuading those who remained yet to be persuaded on the merits of the package that was on the table at the moment.

Asked about compensation payments, the PMS replied that as he understood, compensation payments were already possible under certain circumstances. The significant changes were made last Tuesday.

Asked what consideration had been given to using the Parliament Act, the PMS replied that all of the focus of the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary at the moment was on winning this vote in Parliament, and we were not in a position where we could say confidently that we were able to do that yet, and that was what they were continuing to focus on.

Asked to assure people that there would be no side deals done, the PMS replied that the Home Secretary answered that question definitively yesterday.

Asked if it was the case that this was not a confidence vote, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister made the position very clear on that a week or so ago when he said that this would be treated as a normal vote, just as the previous vote on pre-charge detention was treated.

Put that last week the Government said the vote was not in the bag, and asked if this was still the assessment, the PMS replied that this was correct.
